There has been very little published about anaesthesia for oral and maxillofacial surgery in recent years. That is why this book has been written. In the past, however, dental anaesthesia was a hugely important subject, with many books in circulation, and there were prominent sections in the general textbooks on anaesthesia. The history of dental anaesthesia can almost be regarded as the history of anaesthesia itself and, in this chapter, I hope to show why.
