Spirituality and quality of life (‘QOL’) are both highly debated and frequently contested concepts. If they are juxtaposed, therefore, this results in even more debate, not least because, since some definitions of QOL include a spiritual dimension, the two concepts are already interwoven and overlapping. This interweaving of spirituality and quality of life is particularly evident in the field of palliative care, with some definitions of palliative care including both QOL and spiritual issues. This chapter explores some of the ongoing debates around these concepts, and related issues and consequences for the provision of spiritual care, with a particular focus on care for people with cancer who are approaching the ends of their lives.
