The Divided Self

Show Summary Details

This final chapter examines The Divided Self. This brings together the many strands of the preceding chapters. We look at how Laing’s wide reading in psychiatry, philosophy, religion, and the arts combined with his clinical observation and experience to shape his theories about the schizoid personality and schizophrenia. This chapter offers a critique of Laing’s first book and looks at how it was received on its publication and thereafter. Laing’s place in Scottish culture is considered and his subsequent career following the publication of The Divided Self is briefly examined.
