• Strict maternal pre-pregnancy glycaemic control reduces the incidence of fetal malformations and anomalies in pregnancies complicated by diabetes • Tight maternal glycaemic control during labour and delivery may reduce neonatal hypoglycaemia • Current fetal monitoring techniques cannot reliably detect fetal compromise which may lead to premature delivery which can compound neonatal morbidity.
