• Insulin resistance drops immediately following delivery. There must be a clear management plan for glycaemic control following the birth • Women should be supported to breastfeed • Women with gestational diabetes are at high risk of developing diabetes or glucose intolerance in later life. They should have a glucose assessment six weeks following delivery and then annually • Women with gestational diabetes should be educated about diet and lifestyle to reduce the risk of developing diabetes • Education and advice about effective contraception should be given to all women with diabetes.
