The purpose of this chapter is to encourage a proactive approach to the physical health needs of the care home resident with mental health problems through a consideration of some common clinical issues. The key point is that many problems are not complicated but just need a clear-minded approach and methodical resolution with clear communication. Admission to long-term care in a care home signals a transition in a person’s life and an opportunity to review their health needs and simplify the medications that they are receiving. The approach is a palliative one that aims to promote mental and physical well-being where possible, and to see the resident through to the end of their life in peace and dignity.
