CPC is a relatively new and emerging specialism with great potential for helping children and families who are living with lifethreatening illnesses in all parts of the world. A range of models of care have been established in both the resource-rich and resourcelimited countries. There seems to be growing recognition of the need to develop services for these children and families, but the overall picture is one of huge variance in different parts of the world, a relatively small evidence base, a great need for further education and training, and considerable scope for further development. Broader awareness of the values and philosophy of palliative care and also of its place in society in relation to children is needed. Altering a society’s views can be a difficult and very gradual process, especially when some of these views are deeply embedded in cultural norms and rooted in people’s own subconscious fears of death. Factual information about the potential benefits of palliative care, and about pain relief and opioids, needs to be widely available for the general public in order to raise their expectations and demands of their local healthcare system. Those working in paediatric palliative care need to work closely alongside adult palliative care organizations that are already active across the world, highlighting the special needs of children. As the field of paediatric palliative care increases in size, we will need to enhance the international roles of our own children’s organizations, and continue to develop these paediatric networks.
