A 55-year-old woman is referred by her GP with acute severe lumbar pain which had started 6 weeks previously whilst walking a friend's dog when it lurched suddenly. Her symptoms were settling but there had been an exacerbation a week prior to this consultation, and she feels that she is as bad as she was initially. She has an antalgic gait and sits awkwardly, is not overweight, and localizes the pain to her lower lumbar area.
