Opioids have been shown in animal models to induce hyperalgesic states, particularly on withdrawal. This phenomenon has also been seen in human experimental models, and it appears to occur in clinical practice. The clinical importance of opioid-induced hyperalgesia in chronic pain remains to be fully evaluated.
