In 1893 the Queen Square board conferred on Gowers the title of ‘extra physician’. In an undated letter to Burford Rawlings, Gowers had written to say that he was ‘vexed’ not to be able to get to the hospital that day, and had come to the conclusion that he should cease to attend in the outpatient room, ‘light as the work is made by the consideration of my colleagues and yourself’.
