• Evidenced-based psychotherapies for depression include problem solving therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and cognitive behavioural-analysis system of psychotherapy. • For mild to moderate severity of depression, evidence-based psychotherapies are first-line treatments and are as effective as pharmacotherapy. • For more severe, chronic or comorbid depressions, combined treatment with psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy is indicated. • Cognitive therapy may provide additional and enduring benefits to prevent relapse and/or recurrence.
