Chapter 18 covers renal anaemia and covers the final proof of the existence of an erythropoieitic substance by Erslev (1953) then discovering that the kidney was the major organ of origin, purifying it, measuring it, cloning its gene, producing it by recombinant DNA technology, and then showing that it reversed the anaemia of uraemic subjects, as well as the discovery that the anaemia was found to be more than an endocrine deficiency state and its effects, and those of its reversal, proved rather complex.
