In many species adult neurogenesis is more widespread than in rodents and primates and extends beyond hippocampus and olfactory system. And even in rodents and primates more neurogenesis might be possible, at least under exceptional circumstances. The chapters discusses the concept of the stem cell niche and its role in permitting adult neurogenesis. The different brain regions, for which adult neurogenesis has been reported, are discussed and the problematic evidence is discussed.
