Chapter 7 discusses the timing of autism, specifically asking when diseases with autistic features begin, and addresses that the overwhelming majority of cases appear to be due to chromosomal aberrations or genetic mutations, and that almost all of these changes occur in the germs cells prior to conception or de novo very early in gestation. The cases include evidence in the categories of stigmata studies, epidemiological studies, infections in utero, pharmacological teratogens, neuropathological studies, and known genes associated with autistic features.
