This chapter discusses a variety of fast MR pulse-sequence techniques, focusing particularly on the methods that have proven to be most useful clinically, including those that permit acquisition of images relatively free of motion artefact seven in patients unable to hold their breath. Therefore, it is important to first obtain an understanding of the basics of MR physics and the general design of T1- and T2-weightedpulse sequences. Having this knowledge is essential to better understand the various schemes that are used to design pulse sequences that allow imaging to be completed within a short period of time, and thus within a breath hold, to minimize the effect of motion on the images. Our discussion is certainly not comprehensive, and the techniques discussed form only a subset of the many pulse sequences that are currently available on most clinical scanners.
