This chapter discusses the use of ultrasonography, a relatively inexpensive and readily available imaging modality, which uses no ionizing radiation, as a valuable tool for evaluating the liver. Cystic lesions are well characterized in most cases. The major drawbacks of the technique are discussed, along with comparisons to using CT and MR imaging in the thorough evaluation of the liver, and for characterizing solid liver masses.
