Chapter 8 discusses the general troubles of abdominal MR imaging generally, with a discussion of how MR imaging techniques have advanced, along with the ability to capture diagnostic images of the bowel, including the advantages of superior tissue characterization, multiplanar imaging, and lack of use of ionizing radiation. Applications of MR imaging the GI tract are discussed, including determining the presence and severity of inflammatory bowel disease; preoperative staging and post-treatment assessment of malignant neoplasms; detection of peritoneal abscesses and enteric fistulas; diagnosis of appendicitis, especially in pregnant women and children; and, increasingly, colorectal cancer screening.
