Patients with idiopathic (or primary) generalized epilepsies are presumed to have a low threshold for seizures that may be of genetic origin. These syndromes represent 20% of all epilepsy cases. Treatment consists of broad-spectrum agents, with some specific medications used for specific seizure types seen in IGE.
