Patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy who continue to have seizures despite appropriate AEDs should undergo a trial of valproate, which may be the most effective agent in these epilepsies. Video-EEG monitoring is recommended for patients with continued seizures as careful analysis may reveal a focal epilepsy.
