It is now widely accepted that phasic (synaptic) and tonic (extrasynaptic) GABAergic influences on neuronal excitability are mediated by different receptors with different pharmacological profiles. This chapter will focus on the plasticity of the neurosteriod-sensitive δ subunit containing gamma-aminobutyric acid A (GABAA) receptors (δ-GABAARs) in animal models of temporal lobe epilepsies (TLE) and its possible consequences for modulating the excitability of the dentate gyrus.
