With limited evidence documenting efficacy and with serious side-effects that are becoming more apparent every year, the controversy surrounding the use of opioids for non-terminal chronic pain has never been so strident. Risk assessment and monitoring are essential in order to ensure both safety for our patients and society and ensuring our patients access to these drugs which can in select patients be so useful.
