The spectrum of gastrointestinal (GI) illness in men includes idiopathic disorders such as Irritable Bowel (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease and various cancers. The 4-R approach is a functional medicine approach useful especially in IBS and IBD, incorporating the concepts of removal, re-inoculation, replacement and repair of the gut. Mind-body interventions have been especially helpful in IBS treatment. GI cancers of special concern to men include esophageal, gastric, hepatocellular, pancreatic and colorectal. Integrative approaches to these cancers include nutritional and nutraceutical approaches and mind-body treatment for prevention, treatment and amelioration of conventional treatment associated side effects.
