By definition, vasculitis is inflammation of a vessel. Practically, vasculitis is a diverse group of diseases that are as difficult to classify as they are to diagnose and treat. Large, medium, and small arteries, capillaries, and venules may be involved. The presenting symptoms vary by the organ system or systems affected. Both primary and secondary causes of vasculitis exist, and several conditions can mimic vasculitis. This chapter discusses types of vasculitis grouped by vessel size, with cardiovascular pathology emphasized whenever appropriate.
