Metabolic syndrome is a novel CV risk factor that has generated widespread interest—and controversy—since its inclusion in the Adult Treatment Panel III of the National Cholesterol Education Program. The National Cholesterol Education Program lists 5 characteristics for consideration of metabolic syndrome: large waist circumference, low HDL-C level, high triglyceride level, elevated blood pressure, and impaired fasting glucose level. Controversies surrounding metabolic syndrome, its prevalence, and its relation to other cardiovascular risk factors are reviewed in this chapter.
