This chapter discusses the emergence of an early Israelite state. Topics covered include biblical resources for reconstructing the early monarchy, theories and models on Israelite monarchic beginnings, factors relating to state formation in ancient Israel, material features of the early state in Israel, sociopolitical features of the early monarchy, and sacral-royal ideologies of the monarchic state. It is shown that the Israelite people as a whole were well served by the establishment of a monarchy in its early stages, for it brought widespread social, economic, and political stability.
