This chapter presents a historical background of the Old Testament. It discusses traditional views of authorship and how it was abandoned by academic scholarship from the late 18th century onwards. It looks at the consensus that emerged in academic scholarship in the late 19th century: that the prophets of Israel were the main force behind the formation of Israel's faith, and notable attempts to modify or correct this consensus in the 20th century. Finally, the chapter sketches the origins of Israel's faith and the growth of its scripture in the present Old Testament studies.
