This chapter examines Old Testament scholarship for three periods: up to 1945, from 1945 to 1970, and from 1970 onwards. The discussion for period up to 1945 focuses on the literary, archaeological, and anthropological responses to Wellhausen's claim that the history of Israelite religion can be divided into three periods. The period of 1945 to 1970 is dealt with under four main headings: the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the biblical theology movement, Old Testament theology, and the debate about the history of Israel. The discussion for the period from 1970 deals with literary approaches, anthropology and sociology, feminist and liberation interpretations, ethics, theology, archaeology and history, and traditional literary criticism of the Old Testament.
