Egyptian religious scholar, spiritual guide of al-Jamaah al-Islamiyyah, and radical Islamist. Accused of leading the Egyptian Jihad Organization, which assassinated President Sadat. Encouraged overthrow of the secular state in order to restore Quranic principles. Convicted of inspiring his followers to bomb the World Trade Center in New York City in 1993.
