Quick Reference

The Greek epitaph of Abercius Marcellus, Bp. of Hieropolis (d. c.200), now in the Vatican Museum. Apparently set up by Abercius over his future tomb, it testifies to the universality of the Eucharist. The ‘Life of Abercius’, which incorporates the text of the inscription and attributes to Abercius a ‘Book of Teaching’, is later (probably 4th century).

Subjects: Christianity.
