(1706–81) British general, born in Scotland. In the French and Indian War (1754–63), Abercrombie commanded the British in their attack on the French fort of Ticonderoga (1758); he withdrew after heavy losses to the Marquis de Montcalm's smaller force. He was relieved of command by Sir Jeffrey Amherst that same year and recalled to England.
