After his victory at Tippermuir on 1 September 1644, Montrose advanced upon Aberdeen against a superior covenanting force. After heavy fighting on the 13th, Montrose's troops entered the city. Incensed by the murder of a drummer‐boy, Montrose gave Aberdeen over to pillage.
