Semilegendary Iranian revolutionary who led the rebellion that toppled the Umayyad caliphate in 750 and brought the Abbasid dynasty to power. A freedman convert using the nom de guerre Abu Muslim, he mobilized Arab and Iranian forces in Khurasan (northeast Iran) and governed there under Abbasid authority until executed by the caliph.
