Quick Reference

A tooth, tooth root, or implant used to support a fixed or removable prosthesis (bridge or partial denture). It may provide either the terminal support for a prosthesis or additional intermediate support (pier abutment). In implant dentistry, healing abutments are designed to allow peri-implant soft tissues to heal; they may be screwed into the implant at the time of implant insertion or several months later; they are usually made of titanium. Restorative implant abutments are designed to attach the restoration to the implant and can compensate for soft tissue contour or implant position, angle, or depth.
