A genus of plants, most of which are trees (wattles), although a few are climbers. Typically the leaves are bipinnate, with numerous tiny leaflets, or phyllodic (see phyllody). Acacias are important for timber, fuel wood, tannin, gum arabic (especially A. senegal), perfumes (A. farnesiana), and florists' ‘mimosa’ (usually A. dealbata). There are about 1200 species, most of them in the seasonal tropics and subtropics.
