(mermaid's cup, mermaid's wineglass)
A genus of dasycladalean algae in which the mature thallus consists of a single axis or ‘stalk’ with a whorl of gametangial sacs at the top. Found in warm regions in shallow, sheltered seas, attached to rocks, shells, etc. Fossil Acetabularia dating from the Tertiary have been found.
