A drive related to how hard an athlete tries to gain success, and his or her capacity to experience pride in accomplishments. In sport, success may be self-evaluated or externally evaluated; it maybe viewed in terms of winning a contest, improving the quality of a performance, or gaining approval from people whose views the performer values. Athletes with a high achievement need may require constant feedback and reassurance about their performance. See also achievement motivation.
