A nucleoside analogue (hydroxyethoxymethylguanine) with antiviral properties against both type 1 and 2 herpes virus and varicella-zoster virus. The drug is converted to the monophosphate by viral thymidine kinase and to the triphosphate by cellular enzymes. The triphosphate competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase and can be incorporated into viral DNA where it blocks further replication. TN Zovirax.
