British artist. Born in Isleworth, London, he lives and works in Norfolk. He graduated from St Martin's School of Art in the late 1960s, at the time of questioning about the nature of sculpture. His practice has some affinity with that of Richard Long, in that it involves an active engagement with nature. Ackling makes works by using the effects of the sun through a magnifying glass to burn series of dots, which become lines on pieces of found wood.
