An enzyme (EC 4.2.1.3) of the tricarboxylic acid cycle that catalyses isomerization of citrate/isocitrate. Isoforms are found both in cytoplasm (ACO1, 889 aa) and mitochondrial matrix (ACO2, 778 aa). ACO1 is bifunctional and not only an enzyme of the TCA cycle but also an iron-responsive element (IRE)-binding protein involved in the control of iron metabolism.
