He served as Assistant Secretary of State, Under‐Secretary, and Secretary of State (1949–53), urging international control of nuclear power in the Acheson–Lilienthal Report of 1946, formulating plans for NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), implementing the Marshall Plan, and upholding the Truman Doctrine of US support for nations threatened by communism.
