The inner-ear region and lateral-line organs located in the skin, forming a sensory system that conveys environmental information to the brain of a fish: the lateral-line organs respond to changes in water pressure and displacement, the inner ear responds to sound and gravity. Generally such a system is found in aquatic lower vertebrates (e.g. lampreys, sharks, bony fish, and one or two amphibians).
