A small, irregular joint between the acromion process of the scapula and the distal end of the clavicle. With the sternoclavicular joint, it forms the pectoral (shoulder) girdle. The acromioclavicular joint permits limited motion in all three planes. The deltoid muscles attach to the anterior of the joint and the trapezius to its posterior.
