The major serine peptidase (EC, 402 aa) in the acrosome of the mature spermatozoan where it is stored as an inactive precursor, proacrosin, that is released and activated to assist penetration of the zona pellucida of the egg. The mRNA for proacrosin is synthesized only in the postmeiotic stages of spermatogenesis. Acrosin-binding protein (543 aa) is found in testis and expressed in a subset of tumours.
