Quick Reference

An actin-binding protein of the ADF/*cofilin family. The human form (ADF, destrin,165 aa) has 95% homology to chick ADF. ADF will depolymerize microfilaments and bind G-actin, but does not cap filaments. Cofilin is similar in function but the product of a different gene. ADF has a nuclear localization domain and the interaction with actin is regulated by phosphoinositides. ADF and cofilin are both associated with Hirano bodies. The ADF domain (ADF-homology domain) is an actin-binding motif found in three phylogenetically distinct classes of proteins, ADF/cofilins, twinfilins and drebin/ABP-1s.
