The human homologue of a cell adhesion molecule first identified in the chick as DM-GRASP. A polypeptide (ALCAM, CD166, 500 aa) with five immunoglobulin (Ig) domains that is expressed on mitogen-activated leucocytes and a number of T-cell, B-cell, monocyte, and tumour-derived cell lines and is the ligand for CD6 on T cells. May also have a role in neural cell adhesion (see neurolin).
