A force due to movement entirely controlled by muscular activity. During walking and running, active forces reach their maximum value at least 50 ms after the foot strikes the ground. Active forces are responsible for all the movements of an individual who, when standing on both feet, bends his or her knees and returns to the upright position. Compare impact force.
