A pilot programme established by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, designed to encourage a cooperative international approach to tackling global warming caused by air pollution. It allowed private bodies and organizations in one country to reduce, sequester, or avoid reducing greenhouse gas emissions through funding or running a project in a different country that reduces emissions there. The AIJ programme ended in 2000 and has evolved into joint implementation under the Kyoto Protocol.
