A rare and serious complication of pregnancy that usually presents in the third trimester with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, malaise, and abdominal pain. Liver function tests are abnormal and the features of pre-eclampsia and often HELLP syndrome are present. It is associated with a high maternal and fetal mortality. Hepatic encephalopathy, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and renal failure may develop.
