A group of proteins that are found in plasma at higher levels during acute inflammation. In particular C-reactive protein, orosomucoid, and serum amyloid A protein. A range of other proteins also increase in level, including mannose-binding protein, α1-antitrypsin, α2-macroglobulin, blood clotting factors, complement components, ferritin, ceruloplasmin, and haptoglobin. Other proteins may decrease in concentration (negative acute phase proteins).
