(ARDS)

A major inflammatory reaction in the lung in which fluid may accumulate and prevent gaseous exchange. It may progress to cause multiple organ failure. Formerly known as ‘adult respiratory distress syndrome’ to differentiate it from infant respiratory distress syndrome in which there is deficiency of lung surfactant. See septic shock.
